Located on the northern part of the island of Ré, this village of 700 inhabitants, classified as a tourist resort, will seduce you with its gentle atmosphere and its culture of good living, recognized by the Cittaslow label.

Loix is an “island within an island”, forming a peninsula of 670 hectares, bordered by more than 14 kilometres of coastline. This charming village is linked to the rest of the island of Ré by the road to Loix and by cycle tracks, giving onto incredible panoramas with beautiful lights, between land and sea.

To see in Loix

Situated 1.5 km from the campsite, 5 minutes by bike and only 20 minutes on foot, life in this Charente village revolves around its market and the church of Sainte-Catherine, recognizable by its square bell tower. Local crafts and know-how are at your disposal. You can even visit a number of workshops, from bookbinding and restoration of old documents, to cheese production and soap making.

Take advantage of this typical village of the island of Ré to appreciate its gentle way of life and the charm of the houses with their regular and harmonized architecture. Loix has a preserved historical heritage, in the middle of nature. The beach at 750 m from the campsite is overlooked by the Fort du Grouin. Built of stone according to the plans of Vauban, military strategist of Louis XIV, let yourself be surprised by its preserved architecture.

Things to do in Loix

Take advantage of your stay at the campsite in Loix to swim at the beach of Grouin and to practice water activities. And discover the treasures of Loix, in particular the recently restored La Verdonnais fish lock, a stone fishing structure dating from the Middle Ages.

Surprise yourself by discovering the culture of the olive, present on the Ile de Ré. Developed with the help of an ancestral oil mill, the olive oil from Rhaetia will delight your taste buds, not to mention the tastings at the oyster shack, close to the Grouin beach.

By bike or on foot, you can follow the salt trail that winds through the few fields of lodo olive trees and the many salt marshes. Then, continue your way on the wooden footbridges to the salt marsh ecomuseum on the banks of the Fier d’Ars.

Also, discover the cultivation of the well-named “white gold” and the ancestral techniques of salt farming, perpetuated in the strict tradition of yesteryear and in total respect of nature.
